About the event

Re-minding our Language in the Landscape starts with an introduction and sharing an Urdu ghazal and English poetic rendition on the theme of language and/of loss, lament, memory and invites participants to connect these themes with the of the Cuckmere Valley. For those venturing out, the location for this would be the meanders over the road from Exceat, which used to be the course of the Cuckmere River, but were cut off from the river in 1847 when it was diverted to the straight course it now runs down to the sea from the A259. This is emblematic of the way in which many of us feel ‘cut off’ from our other-than-English mother tongue, but somehow also retain a connection to it which is deeply imbued with hidden memory.

Suitable for any age and background, but most likely to be resonant to those of secondary school age+ (no upper limit!) who have some connection with a mother tongue other than English. Indoors and outdoors, weather permitting. Return to Turkey Barn 1.50pm.
